Welcome Back!
First off, THANK YOU very much for your generous class gift! I feel appreciated and taken care of, and that means a lot to me. Thank you for all of your continuous support! I had an amazing and relaxing break. I spent my holidays in Miami and celebrated with old and new relatives, salsa danced, and ate very good! I enjoyed hearing the children's stories today. I hope you all had an enjoyable break, as well!
This week, we will be focusing on new topics..
In Social Studies, students will be learning the weaknesses of the articles of confederation. They should be able to name 5 by the end of the week. Following after, we will be studying the roles and leaders of the constitutional convention, such as James Madison and Benjamin Franklin. We will be examining their debates, which will prompt different opinions throughout the room. We will discuss the major issues, such as slavery, the rights of states, and The Great Compromise. Ask your child who's side they would have taken for how the states should have voted, and why?
In Science, we will be investigating light. We will be inquiring into translucent, transparent, and opaque materials. List ways and examples of each and how you can classify each.
In Math, we will be exploring fractions. The students took their pre-test today. They will be learning how to model equivalent fractions and decompose them using visuals and equations this week.
For homework (due Friday):
-Read 25-30 minutes each night with a book on their independent reading level. Proficient readers may need up to 45 minutes for growth. They chose books today and pledged to stick with them. On average, it should take them between 7-11 days to complete. We are aiming for next Friday! Students will take an AR test, and are working towards meeting their AR goal at the end of the term. Their individual goals will be discussed with them this week!
Compass Learning- Students will need to login online into Compass Learning, which can be accessed from our classroom website, on the bottom tab 'Odyssey Learning'. They will need to enter in their username and password- should be lunch # and 'go'. The folder is located under ELA->Cabrices> then they should find 4 folders labeled Responding to Reading, Summarizing, Theme, and one other. They will need to complete any TWO this week with at least a 70% success rate.
Students were given spelling words. They should choose 10, or more if they would like. They are responsible for 3 activities off their spelling menu. These should take about 10 minutes each night.

We will have our village gathering is this Thursday, January 8th.

- I invite you to check out the 4th grade curriculum website to read an overview of this term's Unit of Inquiry: How We Express Ourselves. [Link]http://fifthavenue.csdecatur.net/4thgrade/ It's a 6 week inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs, and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity, our appreciation of the aesthetic.
This week, we will be focusing on new topics..
- For ELA, we will be finding themes in different types of literature, such as stories and poems. The theme of a story is what the author is trying to convey — in other words, the central idea of the story. Short stories often have just one theme, whereas novels usually have multiple themes. Here's a great website to help you understand better, so that you and your child can find theme together in literature, or a common book you've both read. http://grammar.about.com/od/tz/g/themeterm.htm
